Hi Everyone!
Welcome to class! After our class today I'm willing to be we are going to have a very good year.
I just wanted to give you some information regarding the class.
First off, no need to bring the book to class (it's heavy) but please bring a notebook and a pen/pencil.
I record all my classes so if a class is missed or there's a wish to review you can watch the class at a later date. I'll be posting recordings to YouTube as "unlisted" so only folks with the direct link to the video can see the recording.
Please take a look at
www.caerusacademy.com for the biology syllabus.
Biology is very heavy on vocabulary so I HIGHLY recommend either flash cards or some sort of flash card app. As the year goes on, each student will want to put words and definitions on the ever growing group of flash cards to quiz themselves regularly. Trust me, there is no better way to study for this class then by self-quizzing on a regular basis.
Each week within 24 hrs of class there will be an email to the students and the parents that gives a brief overview of what was covered in class as well as the homework assignment due the following week.
Homework should take about 1 to 1.5 hours each week. Each student should study for at least an hour each week as well.
Most weeks there will be a quiz at the end of class. The quizzes are intended to make sure the students maintain a good, constant level of studying throughout the year. It has been found that regular quizzes are far more effective than occasional quizzes/tests when it comes to students mastering the material. Regular quizzes also allow the student to have a finite amount of material to master each week. Each quiz will focus primarily on the material in the lecture from the previous class. The following week the students will receive their quizzes graded and corrected. The best way to study for the quizzes is to go over the notes from the lecture, put all vocabulary into flash cards and quiz yourself regularly with the flash cards. Also, if the student got something wrong on a quiz, it is in their best interest to spend the time learning what they did wrong. Quiz questions are often repeated on following quizzes so mastering mistakes is a very good idea.
There will be 2 progress reports, one in December and one in March. There will also be a year long grade report at the end of the year. The grade breakdown is 20% homework, 60% quizzes and 20% final exam. Each trimester I will drop the lowest quiz score as long as the student has participated in, at least, four quizzes.
Don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
I'm looking forward to another great year! See you soon.
This week we covered some administrative stuff such as homework, quizzes, grade reports and we went over a basic syllabus for the year.
We also talked a bit about the difference between a hypothesis and a theory and what it takes for something to become a scientific theory.
For your convenience, I have a blog that contains all class emails and videos. The location is
https://2019bioapex.blogspot.com/.
For homework this week please do the enclosed .pdf. Also, begin memorizing all the prefixes and suffixes on the .pdf. There are a lot but many of which you probably already have an idea as to what they mean. This would be an excellent time to get those flash cards going. There won't be a quiz next week but they will be scattered on upcoming quizzes so please take the time to get to know them.
Best,
Jim Mueller
