Hi folks

Some of y'all wanted to have me share today's Kahoot so here you go.

BTW, this isn't an assignment it's just for fun.  (Perhaps you could even compete with family members.)  :)

Have fun!

Update for Online Classes with Science Jim

Hi folks,

I'm still trying to tweak all this technology so that everyone can have the best, easiest and safest experience possible so here are a couple of new updates.

1. The emails with the links to class seem to occasionally get delayed. To ensure that everyone gets the links to the classroom in time, I'm going to try posting the links to class to the Canvas site. I'm going to post these as announcements so they should be right there when you log in. Several folks have had their emails delayed for some reason and so they haven't been getting the emails on time. I'm hoping this fixes that problem. I will probably continue to send the links to class in emails as well.

2. Also, I am taking the online safety of the students very seriously. There are quite a few folks with malicious intent out there and I want to make folks as safe as possible. With that in mind I am going to begin taking the following precautions.

a. I am going to start locking the classroom about 5 minutes after class is to begin. If you are late to class PLEASE TEXT ME! (919) 907-3217 I will try to keep my phone handy so that I can let you in.

b. All attendants will be entering a waiting room before coming into the classroom. Zoom will alert me that you are in the waiting room and I will then click to let you in.

c. Use your real name or the name of your parent. Since I will need to recognize you to let you in, you must use your real name (first name is fine) in order for us to know you belong in class.

Best,

Jim Mueller

Update on Predator Prey graph

Hi folks,

Here's a bit more information as to what I'm looking for for the lab write up.

The bottom of the lab write-up talks about graphing and Excel.  Don't worry about that.

I do, however, want to see a graph.  Just do one graph. Please plot predators and prey on the same graph.
Let the x axis be the trials and let the y axis be the # of population.
If you need to, you can use two different numbering scales on the y axis.  For example, if you have a max of 200 prey animals but only a max of 10 predators, the predators are going to have a lousy graph, so you may want to use a different scale for both. So for example, your prey scale may go from 0 - 10 - 20 - 30 etc.  But your predator scale would go 1 -2 - 3 - 4 etc.

What I'm hoping you can see from the data is that the predator and prey graphs should follow each other's trends.  As one goes up, the other follows, up to a point.  Then as one falls the other also falls eventually.   The graphs are dependent on one another.

Hand this in through Canvas when you're done.

Let me know if you have questions.

Best,

Jim Mueller

The homework "quiz" for bio

Hi folks,

I'm still getting used to the Canvas quiz thing so this week's "quiz" is quite tricky to do well on.  Even if you get the right answer, if you don't get it EXACTLY right it doesn't give you credit.  I'm going to go in after you guys do the assignment and just mark the grade a full 100%.  Do the best you can, and be sure to study the answers so that you know what's right and wrong for future quizzes but don't worry about spelling errors or other minuscule problems.

Sorry about the frustration on this.  A lot of new stuff to learn in this new world of online grading.

Best,

Jim Mueller

Invitation to Canvas for Biology Class

Hi folks,

Quite a few folks still haven't signed up for Canvas at this point.  I'm going to resend the invitations.  The subject says "Canvas Free for Teachers" so please keep your eyes open for it.

I hope everyone is doing well out there!

Kingdom Chart

Hi folks,

Here's a nice chart of the important things to remember for the various kingdoms.  This will be useful for this week's homework as well as the upcoming quiz.

3/17 Biology Recording

Hi folks,

Here's the recording of the content for this week but unfortunately not from today's class.  With all the newness going on I forgot to hit record and I failed to record today's class.  However, this recording is from the Monday biology class and includes the same material.

3/17 Biology - Classification

Hi everyone!

Our new experiment with our online biology class seemed to go well this morning.  I hope you all had a good experience with it as well.

Some more new news!  I've created a Canvas account which will allow us to do this distance class thing quite a bit easier.  Each week I will be posting all of the assignments and the grades to the site.  You all have access to your very own student pages so that you can keep track of your grades and the assignments that you may be missing.  This is new to me so please don't be surprised if there are some bumps in the road but I believe this will make things easier and more accessible for all of us.

You may have an email from the site already.  Please be sure that parents and students register for the site.  It's all free and is quite nice.

Your homework for each week will be posted to the site and (I think) you'll get notifications when new things get assigned.  No more hunting through your emails to try to find assignments!

Please be sure to sign up for the site as soon as possible.  Your homework is waiting for you!

By the way, quiz next week so be sure to study today's material (pay special attention to the homework) and be sure to spend some time with speciation as well.

Best,

Jim Mueller

3/3 Biology Update and Homework due 3/17

Hi folks,

First off, no class next week due to Spring Break!!!  Have a great break everyone!

This week we wrapped up our discussion of evolution by looking at the process of how organisms can evolve to become two distinct species.

For homework this week read pages 317- 330

Do questions on pg 332

Numbers 2, 6-19 and 21 - 25

Scientists discover first known animal that doesn't breathe | Live Science

Thought you all might find this interesting.   It appears that this is an animal that has evolved "backwards" from a jellyfish.  By backwards I mean it's gone from more complex to less complex.  It's quite fascinating!
